Who doesn’t love french toast! It makes for a great Sunday breakfast when you want to treat yourself. For those of us who like to enjoy sweets more often than not, here’s a healthier version of classic french toast with less calories and more natural ingredients!

I think this healthier recipe can be enjoyed any day you decide you want a little extra sweetness in your life. Just maybe not everyday! Remember the importance of moderation.

Another great thing about this recipe is it’s made best with stale bread! So, on a day you have some stale bread laying around that you’re going to throw away, considering using it to make this instead. No waste!

Ingredients

  • Whole Grain Bread, preferably stale (or whatever leftover bread you have around)
  • 1 Whole Egg
  • 1/4 Cup of Almond Milk (or whatever dairy alternative you prefer)
  • 1/4 Cup of Pure, Natural Maple Syrup
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter (just for greasing the pan and as a possible topping)

Step 1

Crack one egg into a bowl and beat the egg lightly with a fork

Step 2

Add the almond milk, 1 tbsp of syrup, and a few dashes of cinnamon to your egg mixture. Use the same fork to combine these ingredients well.

Step 3

Placing your bread on a large plate and dump the egg mixture all over the bread, letting it spread across the plate as well.

Flip the bread over and roll it around the mixture a bit, ensuring both sides of the bread are saturated. Let that sit as you move on to Step 4.

Step 4

Melt a little pat of butter in a medium sized pan on low-medium heat.

Step 5

Place your soaked bread in the pan and cook each side on low-medium heat until lightly browned. This should take about a minute and a half to two minutes per side.

We’re cooking it slowly on low-medium heat to ensure that the entirety of the bread is cooked through, since the mixture has raw eggs in it! We don’t want the outer part of the toast to burn fast while the insides are still gushy.

Once your slices of bread are done, move them to a fresh plate.

Step 6

Now that your bread is nice and toasty, you can top it with extra cinnamon, the rest of your maple syrup, and any other toppings you’d like to add!

Maybe some powdered sugar, a little extra butter, some berries, or honey!

Enjoy!!
